The Story of Kanan Jarrus

Star Wars: The Clone Wars was so much better than anyone expected. It even went so far as to vastly improve the prequels by association. Still, even with Dave Filoni at the helm, Stars Wars Rebels was met with the same uncertainty. But, like its animated forebears, it delivered exceptional stories and compelling characters like Kanan Jarrus (Caleb Dume). As a member and de facto leader of the Ghost crew, Kanan served as makeshift Jedi Master to Ezra Bridger and was a highlight of the Rebels series. Avoiding spoilers, it was great to see Kanan’s story and evolution, not only through the Stars Wars Rebels series, but in the comics, animated shows, and even on the silver screen.

Kanan Jarrus – Jedi Knight

One of a few great touches of Hasbro’s Star Wars The Black Series is their commitment to a cohesive visual style for characters from all over the expanded Star Wars universe. The Star Wars Rebels The Black Series Kanan Jarrus action figure remains faithful to his animated roots but gives the character a more realistic appearance so it can stand seamlessly alongside figures from the live-action movies and shows. It’s like a piece of fan art you can hold in your hand. It is a daring move from Hasbro and one that effectively tempted collectors to keep expanding the ranks on their shelves. With all the Disney crossovers, the stylistic unity just further drives this idea of a shared universe and singular interwoven narrative. Hasbro also niftily included several series faithful details for their Kanan release. The lightsaber comes apart into two pieces and can be stored on the belt. So, like in the show, Kanan can discreetly carry his lightsaber without immediately identifying himself as a Jedi and garnering unwanted attention from the Galactic Empire. He even comes packing his trusty DL-18 blaster pistol which Return of the Jedi fans will recognize as the blaster Lukes fires before falling into the Rancor pit at Jabba’s palace. Mid-90s ponytail and goatee aside, Kanan Jarrus is a welcomed addition to the Star Wars pantheon and fan’s ever denser toy shelves.
